Continuing my UNIVERSAL SOLDIER double feature, I watched UNIVERSAL SOLDIER: DAY OF RECKONING. Once again aptly directed by John Hyams, I must admit that I liked this one even more than REGENERATION. As a matter of fact, I really liked it.

This film is over the top in every way. The violence is so raw and excessive that it got to me. It has great energy and intensity and kept me riveted for its 93min. runtime.

In this outing, the storyline shifts focus and introduces us to John (Scott Adkins) who wakes up from a coma to discover that his wife and daughter have been brutally murdered. It turns out that Jean-Claude Van Damme’s Luc Deveraux is responsible and John is not going to stop until he gets revenge.

Andrei “The Pitbull” Arlovski is back as the relentless UniSol who is out to stop him. But as John digs deeper, he uncovers secrets that make him question everything he’s been lead to believe. It leads him to an army of super soldiers led by a resurrected Andrew Scott (Dolph Lundgren) and that’s about when all hell breaks loose.

As low-budget action movies go, this one is worth the time. For a movies series that I thought was dead in the water four films ago, I was seriously shocked to discover that it was still alive and kicking. As a matter of fact, I hope they make another. I’ll definitely watch it if they keep up this kind of quality.
