If the nonspecific title didn’t already tip you off, then let me be the one to inform you that the so-called thriller that is PARANOIA is utterly generic and a complete waste of time.
Stop me if you’ve heard this before…
Ambitious, up & comer and did I mention hunky, Adam Cassidy (Liam Hemsworth) is making a name for himself in his chosen vocation (in this case the tech industry). He’s caught the eye of ruthless CEO Gordon Gecko…Ooops I mean ruthless CEO Nicholas Wyatt (Gary Oldman) and that can only lead to no good.
Wyatt wants to take down his former partner Jock Goddard (Harrison Ford) and Adam is a convenient tool. Complicating matters is Goddard’s plucky and did I mention sexy Exec Emma Jennings (Amber Heard) who exudes self-confidence. She also did the horizontal mambo with Adam before she realized they’d be working side by side.
Will Adam be seduced by the money, fast cars and fast women? Will he make it to the top or wind up like his plucky, but deadbeat, yet sage old man Frank (Richard Dreyfuss)?
PARANOIA is slick and polished with fine performances but it’s all for nothing as the plot is so completely standard that it feels manufactured by some sort of cookie-cutter machine that moonlights making movies and dreams of one day getting to assemble a TRANSFORMERS sequel.
There’s not much more to say about this insipid film other than avoid it. You’ve already seen this storyline countless times before and PARANOIA adds nothing new or inspired to the mix other than different actors and different window dressing.
